Raising children is truly a challenge these days, so whenever I see articles that can help, I try to pass them on. Recently, the Wall Street Journal published a great piece on sharing info with your children. Finances are a huge dilemma in most families, so why not start early in educating them when it comes to saving & spending.
When I was a child, my parents always had chores for us to complete before going out to play with our friends. At the time, we resented it at first, but quickly learned that we could multi-task and felt that sense of accomplishment. Also we were given an allowance that had to be earned. I guess life & times are very different today, but the ideas can be implemented. If you share the financial obligations with kids, they will better understand why they cannot get that new phone, etc. Teaching them to save for the wish list item is so much more effective, and also, in many cases, young adults need to feel responsible for their actions. The more you give, the more you get!
My brothers and I have always had to be independent, and responsible for our lives and our effect on others. We thank our parents for instilling in us, the many rules, and disciplines that helped shape us today. We are risk takers, entrepreneurs and continue to dream . Please do not hesitate to help your children become responsible, grateful and caring adults, the world can be changed, make our dreams become a realty!
P.S. very soon , Scarsdale Dental Spa & Wellness will be implementing a volunteer program for young adults…stay tuned!
